Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hills NC

Home to the North Carolina Tar Heels, Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill is often cited as one of the best college football stadiums in the country. In the mid-1920s, North Carolina’s football program needed a new stadium to replace the 2,400-seat Emerson Field. By 1926, donations were being accepted to build new facilities. William Land Kennan Jr. made a huge contribution, collecting most of the stadium’s cost. The stadium was named Kenan Stadium because he provided financial support for the construction of the new stadium in honor of his parents. Construction began in November 1926 and was completed in 1927. The stadium initially had a capacity of 24,000. However, in the 1950s, Kennan donated another $1 million to build his second deck. The upper deck was built in 1963, and he increased the capacity to 48,000. This is the first of many extensions. 

UNC-Chapel Hill receives a $5 million gift.

Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina, received a $5 million donation pledged to meet North Carolina’s increased nurse needs. According to UNC-Chapel Hill, the donation will help make nursing education more affordable and attract more educators. This donation will provide essential partial support to up to 250 undergraduate nursing students each year and help increase school enrollment by up to 50 percent. North Carolina Medical School conducted a study and predicted a significant shortage from 2020 to 2025 as baby boomer nurses also leave the workforce because there is insufficient production.
